The European Heritage Days at Societe Generale's central branch: a confirmed success

By Marjolaine Maeschaert | Head of Societe Generale's Historic Archives | 20/09/11

Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September, over 3,300 visitors walked the mosaic floors at Societe Generale's central branch, warmly welcomed by the branch's staff. This figure was slightly higher than last year.

The occasion has been widely appreciated since it was first organised in 2003.
Around ten employees swapped their weekday suits for t-shirts bearing the Societe Generale Group's logo to greet visitors this weekend. Among them were two customer advisers – Lionel Debreux and Jordan Fernandes – who took turns to speak. Lionel has just celebrated 50 years with the company, having joined the central branch as a doorman aged just 14. Instead of simply giving a presentation, he spoke about the life of employees over the years and the former atmosphere at the branch, "which people under 50 will never experience". Jordan joined the branch two years ago and is unrivalled on the building's history. Both talked about the prestigious building, its history and its architectural details, scattering their explanations with anecdotes about their work. A rapport grew with the audience. The building came to life and provided a glimpse into the everyday work of bankers.

The visitors ranged from people with a passion for heritage to those who were simply curious. In their own words, they had come to "feast their eyes". They were amazed when they saw the glazed dome.

Lionel and Jordan handed over to the craftsmen who are honoured this year. The tile setters who regularly restore the building's 2,600m2 of mosaics explained their work.

The favourite architectural feature of both our customer advisers and Gwendal Tessier, head of HR and logistics at the central branch, is the impressive safe door. The last visitors even had the honour of seeing the 18-tonne steel door being closed, marking the end of this special weekend.
